Linxon, an ABB and SNC-Lavalin company, is helping the City of Anaheim, California provide reliable power to satisfy existing and future demand from development with a turnkey gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) indoor substation.

Housed in specially-designed architectural buildings that blend within Anaheim’s resort area and the surrounding buildings, the 69/12 kilovolt (kV), 112 megavolt ampere (MVA) Harbor GIS substation will greatly improve the reliability of electrical service and provide additional power capacity in the center of Anaheim, a city of about 340,000 residents in Orange County, California.

The project is backed by a wealth of experience executing turnkey (EPC) GIS projects, including two other installations for the city of Anaheim, as well as a strong project team and local strategic partners.

Engineering design, architectural look and permits are key in this project because the substation site is located in the Platinum Triangle, adjacent to the Anaheim Resort, Angels Stadium and the Honda Center. GIS technology helps in the design of the substation because it delivers a vastly smaller footprint than traditional substations, and may be housed in aesthetically pleasing enclosed and partially enclosed buildings.

For this installation Linxon is providing two 69/12 kV, 33/40/50 MVA transformers, as well as 12 kV metal clad air-insulated switchgear (AIS) lineup with 25 breakers; six 69 kV GIS breakers and space for two future devices; as well as protection and control engineering, a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, complete auxiliary systems, HV and MV cables in specially designed underground duct banks & vaults, solar system, and landscaping and architectural buildings.

Incoming/outgoing electric lines to the substation will be underground. Upon completion, the Harbor substation will provide enough additional capacity to serve 15,000 customers.
