Linxon (former ABB) substation technology is ensuring a reliable supply of quality power for the residents of the city of Malmö and the Skåne region of southern Sweden.

Replacing the Sege 400-kilovolt (kV) substation strengthens the Swedish power grid by enhancing power reliability and transmission efficiency, facilitating the supply of quality power to consumers in the region. The project is part of an effort to upgrade the Swedish grid and enable grid integration of clean wind energy in critical areas.

Linxon’s (former ABB) scope of supply includes design and supply of engineered packages for high-voltage air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substations. A range of high-voltage equipment is involved, including an innovative combined disconnector circuit breaker (DCB).

The DCB integrates the disconnecting function into the circuit breaker, and eliminates the need for two separate, free-standing disconnectors, making it possible to reduce the footprint of the substation by up to 50 percent. The substation will also be equipped with IEC 61850-based control and protection systems and equipment.

The Malmö installation comprises nine double busbars, double breaker bays including 420-kV AIS equipment, and turnkey EPC delivery including design, civil, installation and commissioning works.

Linxon (former ABB) is the leading supplier of turnkey air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels reaching 1,100 kV. The Malmö project is part of a larger order to provide three 400-kV substations for the Swedish National Grid operator, Svenska kraftnät, to help it strengthen the grid in northern and southern Sweden with high quality products that can easily function under demanding conditions.

These substations facilitate the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum environmental impact, serving utility, industry and commercial customers as well as sectors like railways, urban transportation and renewables.
