April 29, 2022

The Saharsa substation has been constructed by Linxon for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, a Maharatna company of the Ministry of Power, Government of India. It is located in District Sitamarhi in the state of Bihar, India and has a transformation capacity of 1400 MVA.

Mr. R.K Singh Union cabinet Minister (Power, New and Renewable Energy) dedicated the 400/220/132 kV Substation at Saharsa to the nation on April 15, 2022. Mr. K. Shrikant, Chairman and Managing Director and Mr. Abhay Choudhary, Director – Projects of POWERGRID were also present. During the ceremony, Mr. Singh congratulated POWERGRID to build and dedicate this substation whose foundation stone was laid in 2019.

He said “as many as 28,600,000 households have been connected to electricity supply which is a historic world record in the given time. Next challenge being addressed is providing a dedicated irrigation feeder in all states to be connected to solar generation (making a shift from present Diesel) to provide renewable energy at low price.”

He mentioned that this substation will pave the way to uninterrupted power supply in north Bihar. Present power demand of India is 197,000 MW which is to go up to 220,000 MW very shortly due to increased demand. Against this, the installed capacity is 395,000 MW. This substation will smoothen the power flow from Hydro projects in Bhutan and Nepal.

Also in Bihar, future power demand is expected to go up to 9000 MW by the year 2027 from present 6000 MW and the plan to address this increase is already in place.
